RETAIL UPDATE SeaSafe responds to stem-to-stern warranty proposal
Boating Industry
Tuesday March 2, 2004
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - SeaSafe Group's insured and re-insured Marine Extended Warranty Program has been modified to include coverage manufacturers "desperately need in the quest for stem-to-stern coverage," the company reported in a recent statement.
The Marine Retailers Association of America (MRAA) issued in January a position paper that called for a "bold, new bow-to-stern warranty philosophy," something SeaSafe believes it can help manufacturers offer their dealers.
Many of the components that fail during the first few years of a boat's life carry minimal warranties, the company reported. SeaSafe's coverage now addresses these issues by including customized groups of components that can be covered for up to six years. The coverage can be custom built by a manufacturer to cover components only, engines, or both.
"Today's longer manufacturer warranty terms on engines have resulted in a coverage gap that must be addressed," stated Jamie Gaskins, senior vice-president of the SeaSafe Group. "Boat builders include hull warranties for structural coverage, engines now carry up to 7 year factory warranty terms, but components are often times left out of the mix. Components coverage, including labor charges, must be included to achieve a stem-to-stern warranty and provide customers peace of mind."
Gaskins explained that a $25 component failure in year two can lead to an unhappy customer because the labor charges can be so much higher than the parts, and customers are notorious for wanting everything covered.
SeaSafe said it builds coverage based on the manufacturer's needs, which includes paying for 100 percent of the parts and labor charges. This eliminates the need for a manufacturer to set aside large amounts of revenue for future claims, according to the company.
SeaSafe's administration is over 20 years old, is a Forbes Magazine ranked company and has over 130 employees, 50 of which are dedicated to claims, it reported. The SeaSafe Group, LLC is a marine warranty administrator and consulting company headquartered in Jacksonville, Fla.
Island Packet Provides Pre-owned Yacht Warranty
LARGO, Fla. A new program offering a two-year warranty on the sale of select pre-owned Island Packets is to be offered to customers, the company announced in a recent press release.
Together with SeaSafe Group, the Jacksonville, Florida-based administrator of the program, Island Packet's "Gold Star Certified" program offers buyers of select pre-owned Island Packets a comprehensive warranty covering most equipment and systems on board. Towing, haul-out and blocking fees are also covered under the program, the release stated.
"Our confidence in our product and our suppliers allows us to provide a warranty covering the items most frequently causing concern, enhancing the ownership experience and value for the pre-owned Island Packet buyer," said Bill Bolin, vice president of sales and marketing for Island Packet Yachts.
"The bar needs to be raised on customer satisfaction within our industry and this program reinforces Island Packet's commitment to quality, service, and customer retention," added Jamie Gaskins, senior vice president of the SeaSafe Group.
Gold Star Certified yachts will be available only at authorized Island Packet dealerships around the country. Concurrently with the introduction of this new program, Island Packet has also increased its new boat warranty to a new, three-year "stem-to stern" coverage.
Time to Tackle Warranty Issue
I wanted to respond to the informative article Reagan Haynes wrote in the December 2002 issue titled, Can boat warranties ever match those of cars?
Our company, SeaSafe Group, LLC, is a new comprehensive warranty company specifically for marine manufacturers. We are promoting customized multi-year stem-to-stern warranty programs to help increase customer satisfaction by remedying some of the costs associated with boat ownership.
We have been surveying the market for many years and have found the customer s desire for increased peace of mind is at an all time high in the marine industry, and this article enforces that notion.
As the article points out, the larger manufacturers and those who have received J.D. Power Awards have been working diligently on programs to boost customer satisfaction and retention. Research shows a large majority of dissatisfied customers have experienced multiple warranty problems with little or no resolution, and delays in getting repairs performed due to a somewhat segmented industry.
It is very evident that the boating arena is altogether different from the automotive world. Boat owners have not had the pleasure of taking their boats anywhere for service like a car owner with a standard nationwide warranty program.
Manufacturer level warranty programs would solve not only this problem, but the inherent problems that exist between boat builders and their dealers. Customers could get their boats repaired by any facility that accepts a check or credit card for payment.
Gone are the days where the dealer points his finger at the builder, and the builder feels the customer should pay for repairs. By that point, too much time has passed and now the customer is truly upset; not only with the manufacturer and dealer, but with boating in general.
The time has come to implement programs that remedy a customer getting nickel and dimed to death with repair problems and this article reinforces that issue. Articles like this are great for our industry and help to promote the maturation process we must go through to take care of our number one concern, the customer.
SeaSafe Group Launches Comprehensive Marine Extended Warranty Program
Jacksonville, Florida (12/02 New to the marine marketplace, SeaSafe Group's A rated insured and re-insured Extended Warranty Program received a unanimously favorable response among manufacturers and their customers alike at the recent Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show. Bringing over 100 years of combined marine experience to their clients, SeaSafe has finally produced a remedy for many of the boating costs that are directly responsible for the current consumer boating attrition trend. SeaSafe has finally produced a remedy for many of the extensive and/or unexpected boating costs that can discourage existing and potential consumers.
Specializing in comprehensive warranties and service contracts for marine manufacturers and large marine retailers, the SeaSafe Extended Warranty program is finally now available after ten years of exhaustive research and development spearheaded by production boat manufacturer attorney Gregory A. Anderson. Anderson, who represents over twenty-five varied boat and engine manufacturers, developed the Extended Warranty to meet the concerns expressed by its clients during his years of representing them in product liability and defect cases. Our focus, stated Anderson, is to increase customer retention and satisfaction with multi-year warranties for engines and components. This will allow manufacturers to outsource coverage for component warranties, the basis for the traditional stem-to-stern one-year warranties, for up to six years.
The SeaSafe Extended Warranty is custom built to wrap a manufacturer's hull warranty. Manufacturers and retailers can tailor the amount of coverage they wish to offer as standard equipment and then provide additional coverage for up to six years as a paid option. This allows the manufacturer or even the retailer to determine what level of warranty coverage can be effectively absorbed in the purchase contract, while still allowing the dealer to sell as much additional coverage as the customer requires, said Anderson.
SeaSafe relies on two levels of insurance to provide customers with unmatched stability and claim service. SeaSafes administrator has over fifty claims advisors dedicated to handling claims, each of whom has received extensive training by SeaSafe to ensure that claims are handled promptly, efficiently and courteously. SeaSafe ensures they will be around when the time comes to make a claim with their Forbes Magazine ranked administrator who has been in business since 1980. SeaSafe is more than adequately insured by their primary insurer, and fully reinsured by a secondary level of insurance. We intend to become the platinum standard for extended warranty coverage, stated Anderson.
Anderson, SeaSafes President, has a 100-ton Coast Guard Masters License and has owned and operated boats up to 50 feet when he is not representing their manufacturers in court. It is time for an extended warranty that covers those items that actually fail in service, rather than simply providing a laundry list of covered items that rarely break, said Anderson.
The SeaSafe Group, LLC is a marine warranty administrator headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida. The SeaSafe Extended Warranty programs are offered by a fast growing list of marine manufacturers and retailers. For more information call toll free 866-SEA-SAFE (732-7233).
Our goal is to provide a complete warranty or service contract product, customized to the needs of the individual manufacturer or boat owner, which will help increase customer retention and customer satisfaction.
